Sacrificial Poem

A National Hero

A quintessential Statesman accustomed to the pomp and fanfare, yet he remained humble,

He walked amid many dignitaries, Kings and Queens; still he dined amongst the people.

A Belmont youth born during the Colonial era, he elevated despite the struggle,

Earning an open Island-wide Scholarship award, his contributions were indelible.

Through varying life changing experiences his world view was intricately woven,

A gentleman of stupendous character, to lead this country he was unanimously chosen.

He was described as a bel esprit, who was very aequus and whom achieved teleiotes,

A multilingual person who envisages every creed and race would find an equal place.

This Royal Son of the Soil brought our nation from colonialism to republicanism,

With boundless faith in our destiny he ignited our Fires of Hope to true patriotism.

An Office holder of stature in our nation he served the population with dignity,

As a Diplomat he represented our twin-island with pride par excellence and par stolidity.

In November 1942, he defeated the legendary criminal lawyer Sir Gaston Johnston,

And in June 1962, he became the chief architect of our nation’s constitution.

Notwithstanding his outstanding contributions and monumental achievements,

His jovial congenial personality complemented his philanthropic involvements.

The award for long and meritorious service to family can be added to his accolade,

As a dedicated husband and father these were responsible personal sacrifices he made.

He was celebrated in life and will be honoured even after his departure from earth,

As a former President his morals and values stood for what they were worth.

So on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,

We salute Sir Ellis Emmanuel Innocent Clarke our true national hero.
